Ageing brings a whole host of beauty problems, one of which... lashes that were once lustrous become sparse & un-cooperative. In photos our eyes seem to disappear - they no longer have their spidery friends emphasising them and extensions, although a quick solution, just further damage and can irritate dry menopausal eyes.
Here are my three recommendations from high end, medium range and budget buy:
VolumeCare+ Mascara by Rumi Cosmetiques - £32 (code: VICTORIARUMI - 10% discount)

A brand dedicated to women over 50, Rumi Cosmetiques has developed a formula for mature, thinning, sensitive lashes. What I love about this mascara is that it has built-in peptides which really encourage growth. I get sent lots of mascaras, particularly ones for midlife women; this is the best out there! It gives instant volume without tugging, due to its very flexible wand that coats each fine lash. It's water-resistant too, so if your eyes water, it won't let you down. Long-lasting until you decide to take it off, and then it comes off easily with water and a cloth or face towel.
I've used this religiously for the last four months, monitoring growth by looking in a magnifying mirror - yikes! I had one sorry line of lashes when I started, then hairs above the line started to appear, and now - wait for it... ones above those are appearing!!! Not only does this nourish, but it also instantly volumizes. It comes in natural black, which is not too harsh, and a dark brown, which I think is the perfect shade for mature lashes. They have recently brought out Ocean Blue, which is a lovely deep blue.

Rock n roll mascara by elf - £7

This curling mascara features a curved and double-sided silicone brush to give you your most lifted lashes ever, which are great at opening hooded eyes. The shorter bristles hold onto the formula while the longer bristles separate, lift, and evenly coat each lash—brilliant for sparse, weak lashes. The long-lasting formula is smudge- and flake-resistant to lock curl in place and keep lashes up. At £7, this mascara is a firm favourite of my midlife clients.

Makeup artists often recommend volumizing and lengthening mascaras for mature lashes, focusing on formulas that define without clumping or flaking. Lightweight, hydrating mascaras with flexible wands help lift and separate lashes, creating a fuller, more youthful look. Smudge-proof and ophthalmologist-tested options are ideal for sensitive eyes. Many professionals, including Best Bridal Makeup Artists in Jamshedpur, suggest choosing mascaras with conditioning ingredients like vitamin E to nourish lashes while enhancing their appearance. Proper application techniques, such as wiggling the wand from root to tip, also play a key role in achieving naturally beautiful, lifted lashes.
Mascaras for mature lashes should focus on length, definition, and nourishment rather than heavy volume that can weigh lashes down. Lightweight, hydrating formulas with ingredients like vitamin E or keratin help keep lashes soft and prevent breakage. Opt for mascaras with slim, curved wands to lift and separate lashes without clumping, giving a more youthful and open-eye effect. Brown or soft black shades often look more natural than intense black for mature eyes.
Many experts, including a top makeup artist in Delhi, recommend avoiding overly thick or waterproof formulas daily, as they can make lashes brittle. Instead, choose buildable, smudge-resistant mascaras that enhance lashes gently while maintaining comfort and elegance.
